Lecture 2 – Introducing Artemisia

Art, Power & Revenge: Introducing Artemisia Gentileschi

The life of an artist in early seventeenth century Rome cannot have been easy: too many painters chasing prize commissions, not to mention demanding patrons changing their minds. But what if you were the only woman artist hoping to ‘break into’ the art world? This is the story of Artemisia Gentileschi whose amazing, if at times visceral, paintings are both a feast for the eyes and the triumph of talent over adversity. Neglected almost since her death and now one of the ‘discoveries’ of modern art history, our pair of webinars will be the perfect introduction to her world and her art.

Painting in Rome in the Early Baroque - 20 October, 2020

James Hill will introduce Rome’s art world, c1590 – 1610 when Annibale Carracci, Caravaggio and their contemporaries created what we know as ‘Baroque’ painting. One of those deeply influenced was Orazio Gentileschi, father of the famous female painter, Artemisia.

Introducing Artemisia - 21 October, 2020

Tom Duncan will use The National Gallery’s new exhibition, Artemisia, to introduce this remarkable painter as she worked her way from Rome to London via Florence and Naples and back to Italy.

Format for Lecture

Tom & James will each give a one-hour illustrated lecture. During the lecture you will have the chance to submit written questions which they will answer at the end - if time permits.
